The Sycamore Church had a full house yesterday. I distributed craft and snack items for the children's classes and didn't get to the sanctuary until late To get that good back seat you have to get there early. I scanned my usual area and it was full. I bravely sauntered toward "the other side." Thank goodness, there was one seat on the end of that side's back row available. The lady who was there politely moved down a bit to make room for me. We stood and sang and worshipped side by side. Soon it was time for the customary meet and greet segment. I turned to the lady, and said, "Hi, I'm Judy." She said, "I'm Judy too. We went to high school together. Remember me?"
When she told me her last name I did. She had been a cheerleader. Judy and some of the other cheerleaders were in my PE class. There were a few Judys in my class. We can thank Judy Garland for that I suppose. Most of the Judys, like this cheerleader, were in "the group" "the in-crowd." Now I don't know what kids call the upper-class kids in schools these days, but whatever it is called back in my day I wasn't in it.
Along with not having the money for the latest fashion trends etc, I was not athletically inclined. Therefore, no one wanted me on their team in PE. My mom took me to the family doctor and to avoid the trauma, believe it or not, I got a doctor's excuse from PE in high school. What can I say my mom loved me and Dr. Briscow was a good guy.
Thinking back to those days, I know I would never have dared speak to this Judy, much less have sat beside her. God has a way of bringing things from your past to your present and showing you His purpose. Kids grow up and become adults. Thank God! Nothing you are going through right now is permanent. Someday we will all stand together before God. But today we all have an opportunity for a practice run. I think yesterday, Judy and I did that. I think God smiled. I did.
